4 Resolutions to a healthy new year

New Year, New You: Refreshing Your Dental Habits

The new year is the perfect time to start establishing healthy habits. Whether it’s brushing consistently or visiting your dentist on the regular, wellness resolutions are always in season and the benefits of achieving your goals are always rewarding.

Commit to the Big Three in 2020!

1) Brushing Thoroughly

While brushing your teeth may seem like a simple task, many people forget to brush regularly. Making (and sticking to) a daily schedule is essential to remember to brush your teeth. Incorporating your dental hygiene into your morning and nightly routine will have you brushing consistently in no time.

2) Nightly Flossing

Flossing plays an important role in preventing bacteria and disease from affecting your gums. A great tip for remembering to floss is to use the one-time floss that can be used and thrown away which makes the habit easy to establish even if you’re on the go.

3) Rinse with Mouthwash

If you’re going to brush your teeth and floss, why not finish the job with some mouthwash? Professionals recommend using mouthwash for 30 seconds a day, twice a day. Set a timer on your phone and swish from front to back and side to side to ensure that every crevice is reached.

Refresh Your Technique

Many people don’t pay enough attention to their brushing technique. However, it’s more important than you may have been led to believe. Applying the wrong amount of pressure or brushing at an angle can harm your gums. When using a manual toothbrush, use gentle and short back-and-forth motions while keeping the pressure light to allow the bristles to skim across your teeth and gumline.

Make sure you spend enough time brushing your teeth, as well. It’s recommended to spend two minutes brushing your teeth for four minutes total. However, if the two minutes go by and you haven’t brushed the entirety of your mouth, keep brushing until every surface has been reached.

Keep Up On Your Dental Appointments

Regular check-ups are an essential part of any successful dental routine. This year, make the effort to visit your dentist every six months to keep your oral health progress on track. While this is exceptionally important if you have any history of having any dental diseases, visiting your dentist regularly ensures that you receive professional cleanings in addition to x-rays and other services to help keep your smile looking healthy and radiant.
